The Gist: In a depraved New York neighborhood, the youngest of three mixed-race sisters named Sweetness O’Hara, spends the better part of being seventeen navigating an identity between the known: a violent life of crime, and the unknown: a life of purpose and meaning.….(more)

Cast: Zoe Kravitz, Jason Clarke, Antonique Smith, Yolonda Ross, Gabourey ‘Gabby’ Sidibe, Shareeka Epps, Sonequa Martin, Tariq Trotter, Tim Blake Nelson and EJ Bonilla.

Why is it on the list?: Workshopped at the Sundance labs, Mahoney’s intimate portrait appears to belong to the Raising Victor Vargas or Half Nelson type. Count me for this indie debut.

Release Date/Status?: Currently in post, with its NYC-set storyline could very much find itself at Tribeca, but a sidebar section at Cannes might also be a possibility.
