TIFF Picks 09: Jaco Van Dormael’s Mr. Nobody

Date:

#28. MR. NOBODY

Director: Jaco Van Dormael
Cast: Jared Leto, Sarah Polley, Diane Kruger, Linh-Dan Pham, Rhys Ifans
Distributor: Wild Bunch is selling World Rights.

Buzz: Bypassing Venice for a world preem at TIFF, Dormael’s last pic was in 1996 (Le Huitième jour) and the film before that was 1991’s Toto le héros. I’m not sure how much time the filmmaker has been working on this project, but sci-fi/fantasy films are all the rage now and I’m looking forward to clone world that includes a pairing of young, underrated, brilliant actors in Leto and Polley.

The Gist: “Mr Nobody” is inspired by the “butterfly effect” — the chaos theory notion that the beat of a butterfly’s wings can cause a storm thousands of miles away. Set in a world where only clones have survived, there is one human left. The story is told in a non-linear, conceptual.
