From white trash impersonations to taking out the trash (man-scum), during her junket tour supporting the release of Sleepwalking it was announced that the very busy Charlize Theron will take on the role of producer/star on a possible remake of the third film in Chan-wook Park’s
revenge trilogy.
Confirmation of the project comes today via Screen Daily who report that CJ Entertainment (producers of the original) who are looking to extend the life of some of the more original narratives that play out in the Asian crowds into the North American market. Theron and her Denver and Delilah Productions have optioned the property.
The methodical, slow-paced, female empowering, revenge flick Sympathy For
Lady Vengeance would carry perhaps more familiar backdrops of the U.S of A’s incarceration system. The original sees a 19 year-old girl go off to prison for the murder
and abduction of a child on behalf of her accomplice, only to find out that she
is betrayed. While in prison, she carefully prepares for her revenge by winning
the hearts of her fellow inmates with her kindness’. Upon her release from
prison after 13 years, she finally sets out to seek revenge on the person that
betrayed her, with the help of her former prison mates.
Theron has got plenty of the table these days – she just completed The Burning Plain for Guillermo Arriaga and is set to star in John
Hillcoat‘s The Road. We should next see her in the release of her hubby’s Vancouver-shot Battle in Seattle.
