Drawn Together – Uncensored!: Season Three | DVD Review

“…Like any respectable reality show our characters talk to the camera about their experiences and about what makes them want to slit their roommate’s throat in their sleep…”

Using satires of popular cartoon characters to parody a reality TV show, Drawn Together is comprised of Captain Hero (Bruce Timm-ish Superman/Batman), Princess Clara (Disney Princess), Foxxy Love (Hanna-Barbera), Toot (Betty Boop), Wooldoor Sockbat (Spumco), Ling-Ling (Pokemon’s Pikachu), Xandir P. Wifflebottom (Zelda’s Link), and Spanky Hamm (who only after researching did I find out he’s a parody of Flash animated web cartoons, the thick black outline should’ve been a dead giveaway but apparently I need it spelled out for me). Like any respectable reality show our characters talk to the camera about their experiences and about what makes them want to slit their roommate’s throat in their sleep.

In the 2-part episode Lost In Parking Space, Princess Clara tries convincing her housemates to repent for their sins right before they ditch her and head for the mall, with matching shirts to boot. Thinking that all her roomates were enraptured to heaven while she was left behind, Princess Clara discovers her dark side after a run-in with a delivery guy. In the mall parking lot our intrepid heroes squeeze the van into a compact space and become trapped! Zounds! Foxxy Love breaks out and goes in search of aid but ends up a prisoner in a Hot Topic inventory backstore where a bunch of classic cartoon characters are being tortured ala Hostel, but actually scary, becasue honestly, who wants to see a toon get tortured? Am I right, people? Our remaining trapped heroes fashion a vehicle out of the “scraps” of the van from which they were trapped, complete with A-Team theme song parody. There’s also a Lion King parody and Toot hallucinates after drinking aquarium salt water. That’s pretty much it. This is actually spread out over 2 episodes. How long did it take you to read this? Well that’s how long that episode should’ve actually lasted.

The Special Features unfortunately offer only the bare basics such as Audio Commentary on certain episodes, Cartoon Network Promos and Karaoke Sing-Along, a Cartoon Network DVD staple.

In true toon fashion this show is absurd and unpredictable but also often times unfunny. The novelty of cartoon nudity and swearing quickly wanes right before the theme song ends. Much like Harvey Birdman spoofing classic cartoon characters, this show has an interesting premise but unfortunately isn’t even a fraction of the dry wit and subversive humor. So unless you’re channel surfing with one eye half open and you’re other hand tucked down deep into your waistband around 3 AM looking for any kind of nudity an swearing, this show isn’t for you. If you’re a Jay Leno fan, then all season 3 of Drawn Together will be in your mailbox by the time you finish reading this. Don’t believe me? Go ahead and look, I’ll wait…
