If you know his filmography we get a strong sense of his pulse, where his interests might lie so it was nice to see Yung Chang working towards fiction as a new working canvas. Known for his award winning string of docus in Up the Yangtze (2008), China Heavyweight (2012), and The Fruit Hunters (2013), Eggplant follows three Chinese millennials who strive for a better, more meaningful existence in a society fixated on money, materialism and duty. In our convo we went over the curiosity of the person and how the backdrop will help frame the character and possible narrative. Since this sit-down, Chang directed the short Gatekeeper (2016) and was one among the several docu helmers on the frontlines for the POTUS45 election in 11/8/16.
