Before Robin Hood there was ‘Tenderness’
Picked up by Lionsgate Films exactly two years ago, despite having an unsexy Russell Crowe in the lead, John Polson's Tenderness has been collecting dust and judging by the film's trailer below, it could be argued that this looks like straight to video fair than an improvement on Swimfan and Hide and Seek. Until now it hadn't seen the day of light having been showed solely in market festival screenings, but a recent submission to the MPAA board for ratings purposes and a world preem back in Sydney means we can expect this to hit theaters.

From March 1st 2009 to July 15th 2009, the filmmakers mentioned below will be part of Cannes' 2009 La Résidence de la Cinéfondation - a programme which helps young filmmakers write the screenplay and prepare for the production of their first or second feature film. Gilles Jacob and jury chose from over 160 applicants. This year's batch of unknown filmmakers come from Central America and Europe.
Film Movement Grabs Un Certain Regard Standout
I think Film Movement's company motto should be "no excellent film gets left behind". I've repeatedly missed out Lee Isaac Chung's debut film on the festival circuit, but it looks like FM have given a second life to the debut of a promising new director (Chung was fittingly nominated for the Indie Spirit's Someone to Watch Award). The company is looking at a May release.

When I wrote the script, Phoebe originally walked out of her door into her back yard and immediately saw the Red Queen running. Bobby hit upon the magical idea of creating a sequence out of it – Phoebe sees flashes of the Red Queen behind a tree, then chases after her – the Queen is always just out of reach. This ended up creating exactly the kind of visceral, infectious excitement we needed in introducing Wonderland.
Killer Films Calm Rupert Friend Down with ‘Lullaby’
In an exclusive bit of news that hasn't made the trades yet, Killer Film's Christine Vachon confirmed that Rupert Friend, the young actor who was the breakout thesp in Berlin Film Festival's Stephen Fry's Cheri and gave a formidable perf in Jean-Marc Vallee's The Young Victoria will topline Lullaby for Pi. The France/Canada co-production will begin lensing shortly in the prairie provinces of Canada.
