2010’s Top 10: Repeat Offenders in Rachid Bouchareb and Debbouze, Zem, Bouajila and Blancan

The French-Algerian Bouchareb employed the services of Roschdy Zem in 2001's Little Senegal and then cast Zem along with Jamel Debbouze, Sami Bouajila and Bernard Blancan in Indigènes - for which they won the Best Actor prize at Cannes in 2006. This mini battalion of Tunisian and Moroccan born or of descent actors got to explore not one, but two WWII realities. Outside the Law was also featured on the Croisette to mixed reviews, but we hope the filmmaker further uses the troupe of actors in both a historical or contempo setting.

Film in Pictures: Chris Kentis and Laura Lau’s Silent House

It was just announced this week that Chris Kentis and Laura Lau's Silent House was a last minute Park City at Midnight entry for Sundance (only three weeks to go folks) and we've now got your first look at the stills from the U.S remake of Uruguayan film La Casa Muda starring Elizabeth Olsen.

Cannes 2010 Interview: Derek Cianfrance (Blue Valentine)

Blue Valentine followed in the footsteps of Lee Daniels' Precious, in that both films began their festival life in Park City and would make their international premiere in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes where the international critics shared the same enthusiasm for the film as the Sundance audiences did.

Sundance 2010 Interview: Derek Cianfrance (Blue Valentine)

If you asked me at different times throughout the year what the highlight of 2010 was in cinema, for about eleven consecutive months I'd come back to the same answer. You see, since its premiere at the Eccles Theatre in Park City back in January of this year, Derek Cianfrance's melancholic, hopeful and deeply affecting portrait and deconstruction of couple-hood carries my label as the most important film of 2010. We've waited almost an entire twelve months for Blue Valentine to receive its theatrical release, but that's nothing compared to the twelve years Cianfrance put into this project.

Last Minute Sundance Addition: Silent House Remake From Open Water Pair

With less than a month before the festival begins, Sundance have added what could be considered a "last minute" entry that will probably be shown in the very late stages of the festival. I'm not sure when Sundance vets and Open Water filmmaker team of Chris Kentis and Laura Lau grabbed the remake rights to the Uruguayan film La Casa Muda which premiered in Cannes last May, but seeing that the original film is a hand-held, one take set-up means that production could have taken place last month and easily prepped after one month in post.
