Seven films in and all features have premiered in Cannes, Buenos Aires born filmmaker Lisandro Alonso has alongside the likes of Lucrecia Martel and Pablo Trapero been at the forefront of the New Argentine Cinema movement. Known for minimalist “slow cinema,” famous for austere, observational, and blurring the lines between docu observation and fiction the key themes in his work include solitude, wandering journeymen with deep ties to the landscape. He first loaded up the Croisette with four features in his first decade of filmmaking – La Libertad (2001), Los Muertos (2004), Fantasma (2006) and Liverpool (2008). He presented Jauja in the Un Certain Regard section in 2014, and we had to wait until 2023 for his ambitious Eureka to premiere as a Cannes Premiere selection. Trying to fly under the radar (tough to conceal though when you have a recent Oscar nominated actor in his own country) and moving into production in Brazil just before he fly over to the Quinzaine to premiere La Libertad Doble, production began in April of 2026 in the Brazilian state of Tocantins. After remaking, extending and revisiting the subject in 2004’s Los Muertos, Alonso continues re-thinking cinema this time with another filmmaker’s work through a reinterpretation of a canonical film and a replacement of the backdrop. The film in question is Taste of Cherry (read review) by Abbas Kiarostami.
We’ll find out the official synopsis in 2027 – but for now, what we can confirm is this is in Portuguese.
Wagner Moura toplines the film. Adanilo (who appeared in Eureka), veteran actor Germán de Silva, Isabela Catão and Adirley Queirós are part of the cast.
Bananeira Filmes’ Vânia Catani and Cunhã Porã Filmes’ Tarcila Jacob are the producers. We expect more names to be unveiled. Cinematography duties were handled by Lula Carvalho.
Seeing that he has never strayed away from Cannes, we honestly think that this might be his first film in competition for the Palme d’Or.
