Interview: John Maloof & Charlie Siskel (Finding Vivian Maier)

Date:

When first time filmmaker John Maloof stumbled upon Vivian Maier’s mysterious, but gorgeous body of work at auction back in 2009, he did not expect to find himself still sifting through the collection years later, piecing together the photographer’s story in Finding Vivian Maier, a riveting feature documentary he’s developed together with the help of Michael Moore satellite associate, Charlie Siskel as his co-director. Briefly after its world premiere at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival, I had the opportunity to speak with the filmmakers on how they came to collaborate and what it’s like to weave a visual narrative with the 100,000 photographs and additional audio and video recordings they had to work with. Our conversation can be found below, as well as my review of the film – here.
