Interview: Josh Safdie – Marty Supreme

Date:

Marty Supreme marks a new evolution in the work of Josh Safdie, a filmmaker whose auteur signature is defined by nervy momentum, abrasive intimacy, and a deep fascination with dudes in states of self-constructed crisis. I’ve been following Josh and his brother Ben ever since they shored up on the Croisette in the Directors’ Fortnight section and while there is always moments of brilliance in their much lauded titles such as Good Time and Uncut Gems, this truly feels like the best portrait in controlled chaos from the Safdie output. Still working with compulsive motion and emotional claustrophobia, centered on protagonists who mythologize themselves even as their lives spiral out of control, behind a cast led by Timothée Chalamet, Odessa A’zion, Abel Ferrara, Kevin O’Leary, Tyler Okonma (aka Tyler, The Creator), and Gwyneth Paltrow there are a slew of others who truly look the part – and so I asked Josh about how working with Casting Director Jennifer Venditti has evolved over the years especially here. A24 is releasing Marty Supreme on Christmas day.
