2012 Cannes Film Festival Predictions: Xavier Giannoli’s Superstar

Gist: Starring Mathieu Amalric, Kad Merad, Cécile de France and Louis-Do de Lencquesaing, this appears to cover Truman Show-esque territory focusing on the instant fame of the ordinary joe. “When he tries to find out why, his fame just grows. The more he questions it, disowns it, denies it – the more famous he becomes. Martin is trapped in a never-ending, ever-expanding media maelstrom. And the worst is yet to come.”

Prediction: I’m thinking the French filmmaker has the edge as he was the winner of the Palme d’Or for his short film L’interview, and he showcased a pair of back-to back features in the Main Comp with 2006’s Quand j’étais chanteur (starring Cécile De France and Mathieu Amalric – see pic above) and 2009’s In the Beginning. By all logic this will be among the big boys in the Main Comp but that’s only if they favor the film over Garrone’s Big House – which treads in same thematic terrain.
