Top 200 Most Anticipated Foreign Films of 2023: #143. Angela Schanelec’s Musik

Date:

Musik

Veteran German filmmaker Angela Schanelec (Locarno’16 – The Dreamed Path / Berlinale ’19 – I Was at Home, But…) latest oeuvre shot in autumn of 2020 – so this is more than ready. Featuring Aliocha Schneider, Miriam Jakob, Agathe Bonitzer and Marisha Triantafyllidou, Musik is a modern-day retelling of the Oedipus myth. Kirill Krasovski produced the film and Schanelec once again works with cinematographer Ivan Marković.

Gist: This tells the story of a boy who grows up with his step-parents in Greece. At the age of 20, he unwittingly murders his father. While serving his sentence, he falls in love and has a child with a woman who works in the prison.

Release Date/Prediction: This should be in comp for the Golden Bear at the Berlinale — I Was at Home, but… landed her the Silver Bear for Best Director. The film is set for a domestic release in March.
