Top 150 Most Anticipated Foreign Films of 2020: #80. The Reckoning – Neil Marshall

Date:

The Reckoning

Even though English director Neil Marshall’s first foray into franchise filmmaking with 2019’s Hellboy was a critical and financial disappointment (and broke a nine year hiatus between feature films), the genre auteur will be returning with something to be a bit more excited for with The Reckoning, a return to the genre tropes from his earlier features. The UK film is produced by Daniel-Konrad Cooper and Steffen Wild and stars Charlotte Kirk, Joe Anderson, Steven Waddington and Sean Pertwee. Marshall became an instant genre director of note with his 2005 hit The Descent, followed by his Mad Max homage Doomsday (2008) and his  2010 period drama Centurion (read review).

Gist: Co-written by lead Charlotte Kirk and Edward Evers-Swindell, the 1665 New England set horror film stars Kirk as Evelyn Haverstock, whose husband (Anderson) commits suicide, finding herself falsely accused of witchcraft after rejecting the advances of her landlord.

Release Date/Prediction: With production taking place in Hungary back in August, the first photos from the completed project were released in September, 2019 as Highland Film Group began selling worldwide rights on the title. The Reckoning seems a likely candidate for Midnight Madness at TIFF 2020.
