Unicorns
For their third creative collaboration, actor James Krishna Floyd shares co-directing duties alongside Sally El Hosaini for what becomes her third directing outing. The Welsh-Egyptian filmmaker just preemed the Netflix backed The Swimmers as the opening night film at last year’s TIFF and the timing would be great for another Toronto showcase with Unicorns. With Stephen Daldry onboard as executive producer, production on Unicorns took place this past October-November with actor Ben Hardy toplining. Produced by Trudie Styler and Celine Rattray’s Maven Screen Media and Philip Herd’s Chromatic Aberration, Floyd is working from a personal place with a queer-friendly film that deals with themes of culture clashes and taboo romance. El Hosaini is best known for her debut feature My Brother the Devil – a Sundance and Berlin comp title. Hosaini is now attached to Jones – a fascinating look at Jim Jones.
Gist: a cross-cultural romance set against a secretive subculture in London, revolving around a queer South Asian nightclub performer living a double life, and a young, single father who works as a mechanic. When their paths collide, a dramatic search for identity is sparked.
