Other Painful True Story: Birbiglia Brings Show Biz One-upmanship in “Don’t Think Twice”

Date:

My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend won’t be his next feature film project. Moving from the page to the stage and to the silver screen with Sleepwalk With MeMike Birbiglia will follow up his Sundance selected debut film with a sophomore film that promises to poke some serious fun at professional infighting and jealousy. Directing from his own script, Variety reports that Birbiglia’s the show-business dramedy titled Don’t Think Twice has began lensing in NYC with a cast comprised of Birbiglia himself, Keegan-Michael Key, Gillian Jacobs, Kate Micucci, Tami Sagher and Chris Gethard. Producers are Birbiglia, Cold Iron Pictures’ Miranda Bailey and Amanda Marshall (they knocked it out of the Park City park with The Diary of a Teenage Girl) and executive producers Ira Glass (who produced Birbiglia’s debut) and the mostly distributor, but sometimes production co. in Film Arcade’s J. Beck and Andy Bohn.

Gist: This is about an improv group loses the lease on their home theater at the same time that one of their cast members gets chosen for the biggest sketch comedy show on TV — leading to bitterness and backstabbing between friends when they realize that maybe not everyone’s gonna make it after all.

Worth Noting: Birbiglia was present on the silver screen this summer shoring up in the recently released Joe Swanberg film Digging for Fire and Apatow’s Trainwreck.

Do We Care?: We raved about the creative brilliance in Birbiglia’s NEXT section oeuvre, so we’d be much inclined to tap this as a must see item for next year, possibly a final spot among the Sundance line-up if post production is jettisoned. Here is our interview with Birbiglia at the 2012 edition of Sundance.
