2013 Cannes Film Festival Predictions: Steven Soderbergh’s Behind the Candelabra

#27. Steven Soderbergh’s Behind the Candelabra

Gist: Based on the autobiographical novel, the film recounts the tempestuous 6 year relationship between Liberace and his much younger lover, Scott Thorson.

Prediction: Just as HBO’s Hemingway & Gellhorn played out of competition in 2012, we are positive this HBO feature, that has been confirmed as Soderbergh’s last film, will be premiered at the festival in the same fashion. With Michael Douglas and Matt Damon in the leads, and an intriguing supporting cast (Debbie Reynolds!), its status as a television project won’t hamper this from being one of the most highly anticipated titles in the lineup. Soderbergh’s rich history with the fest from the Palme d’Or winning Sex, Lies & Videotape (1989) to his last double Che feature (2008) should be the lieu for the TV film which gets released back in the U.S on May 26th.
