After unveiling their feature film line-up on Monday, now the spotlight is on the shorts this morning. La Semaine de la Critique aka Critics’ Week have a set of ten competition films (those filmmakers can workshop their eventual feature in their Next Step Programme) and a trio of shorts by established filmmakers make up the Special Screening triple bill. Smoke Sauna Sisterhood‘s Anna Hints teamed with Tushar Prakash for “Sauna Day” which flips the focus on the gender and looks at Southern Estonian men. Feature filmmaker Lucie Borleteau (Fidelio, Alice’s Odyssey) arrives with the teen tale about wanting a first kiss in “1996 ou les Malheurs de Solveig.” We also find “Las novias del Sur” – by Spanish filmmaker Elena López Riera. She premiered Directors’ Fortnight El agua in 2022. Here she looks at the end of a cycle — we find mature women talk about their wedding, their first time, their intimate relationship with sex and the filmmaker questions her own condition as an unmarried woman with no children.
