His fourth feature film at Cannes since Crash was awarded the Special Jury Prize (1996), the novel to screen adaptation of Don DeLillo’s Cosmopolis sees Robert Pattinson deliver, perhaps his best performance to date as Eric Packer – the ego-centric billionaire whose financial tsunami is played out into one long limo ride. With a flurry of short and sweet appearances from the likes of Sarah Gadon, Juliette Binoche, Mathieu Amalric, Samatha Morton and Paul Giamatti, several critics at the fest are comparing this to On the Road, as both are difficult to adapt projects. So the critical consensus among our panelists and the festival journos is that this is either a film to be loved or hate — which may have to do with David Cronenberg’s chosen form.
