Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City – 2023 Cannes Critics’ Panel: Day 7

Technically speaking the great American filmmaker Wes Anderson has now appeared in the Cannes competition with three titles – opening the ’12 edition with Moonrise Kingdom, giving The French Dispatch for both the 2020 pandemic label year and 2021 release and he dropped by the red carpet with an actual bus with the loads of folks who starred in Asteroid City.

In 1955, students and parents from across the country gather for scholarly competition, rest, recreation, comedy, drama, and romance at a Junior Stargazer convention held in a fictional American desert town. Jason Schwartzman, Scarlett Johansson, Jeffrey Wright, Tilda Swinton, Bryan Cranston, Ed Norton, Adrien Brody, Liev Schreiber, Willem Dafoe, Tony Revolori, Stephen Park, Rupert Friend, Jeff Goldblum, Tom Hanks, Rita Wilson, Margot Robbie, Hope Davis, Maya Hawke, Steve Carrell, Matt Dillon, Hong Chau, Jake Ryan, Grace Edwards, Aristou Meehan, Sophia Lillis and Ethan Lee have parts. Bill Murray skipped this one.

Current temp: Wes Anderson’s newest film is over-baked and at least looks good is among the let downs of this year’s festival. Sicking to the bottom of our grid like the featured meteorite, Asteroid City is currently sitting at a 2.5 average with one grade to go.
