20 Sirens of 2005: Part I

Maxim and FMH have their top 100s, but here at IONCINEMA.com we have more discriminating tastes. This year we’ve upped the list, from 2004’s 10 picks (view here) to a total of 20. Yes that’s right – 20 silver screen vixens that’ve left quite the impression on celluloid and this filmgoer. These señoritas have a je-ne-sais-quoi quality that mixes both acting skills with on-screen vigor. Enjoy this year’s selection!

***

20. Cassandra Magrath

She went toe to toe with a maniac from the outback in the surprisingly good
horror flick Wolf Creek.
What’s next? Nothing confirmed – but most likely a couple
of Aussie productions.

19. Emily Mortimer

She played the cute hopeless mother in Dear
Frankie
, voiced the English translation of Howl’s
Moving Castle
and played the scorned wife in Match
Point
.
What’s next? The Pink Panther,
Chaos Theory, Who
Killed Norma Barnes?
, Barry Munday
and Snow Angels.

18. Miranda July

From total obscurity, this Revenge of the Nerds spokesperson directed herself
in the indie summer treat Me and You and Everyone
We Know
.
What’s next? Look for some time to elapse before we see a feature
length sophomore feature, but look for multimedia and short film items to pop
up in the near future.

17. Monica Bellucci

The Italian stallion would normally top the charts as the most beautiful woman
in the world – this year she only surfaced on a late delivery of The
Brothers Grimm
.
What’s next? A couple of foreign language pics which will most
certainly not make it into North America, with the exception of the action flick,
Shoot-Em-Up.

16. Alison Lohman

She was all grown up (and disturbingly all grown down?) in Egoyan’s Where
the Truth Lies
.
What’s next? A busy year with Flicka,
Texas Lullaby, Delirious,
The Big White and in 2007, – Beowulf.

15. Vera Farmiga

Her chilling performance in Down to the Bone
finally saw the day this year.
What’s next? 4 feature films for an actress who should become
a household name in some …households with Running
Scared
, Breaking and Entering,
NeverWas, and The
Departed
.

14. Dina Korzun

The Russian actress’ gritty performance in Forty
Shades of Blue
gave her a Independent Spirit Awards nom for Best Female
lead.
What’s next? Look for her to stock to grow in the near future,
with Russian productions being her main bread winner.

13. Nathalie Press & Emily Blunt

I give an ex-equo to this playful pair who played in Pawel Pawlikowski’s My
Summer of Love
.
What’s next? Blunt (pictured left) is on a nice career path
with The Devil Wears Prada and Who
Killed Norma Barnes
, Press can be found in some U.K productions – including,
Chromophobia.

12. Q’orianka Kilcher

The newbie actress won a massive auditions process to get the lead female
role in The New World.
What’s next? Braces, acne and homework. Kilcher is only 15
years old and only time will tell.

11. Kelly Reilly

Call this a breakout year for the actress with roles in Pride
& Prejudice
, The Libertine, Mrs.
Henderson Presents
and Les Poupées Russes.
What’s next? Not much listed for this redhead – but at least
we have this picture above to pass the time.

Stay tuned for our Top ten tomorrow!
