IFC makes ‘Weekend’ purchase at SXSW

Date:

Call this a case of déjà vu. Chalk one up for the independent filmmaker, as IFC Films have decided to take a second dip into the mumblecore wave by re-teaming with Joe Swanberg/Greta Gerwig. I’m not sure what kind of return they had with Hannah Takes the
Stairs
– but I’m banking that the South by Southwest Film Festival preemed romantic drama will have a month long theatrical run.

Over at Spoutblog, Swanberg calls his latest oeuvre a “When Harry Meets Sally meets DIE HARD
without the cuteness or the explosions”
with Nights and
Weekends
we find the story of Mattie and James who are in love. But too many mornings and too
many miles apart have taken a toll on them. As they struggle with the distance
between New York and Chicago, their visits become reminders of the difficulties,
not the pleasures, of their relationship. Check out a trio of film clips here.

The thrill of meeting Marjane Satrapi reminded me of being 6 years old at Disney Land when I met the living, breathing Cinderella. Except Cinderella was an actress with a blond wig and Marjane is the real woman behind her autobiographical graphic novel, turned movie, “Persepolis”. The distinctive mole on her nose and her dark sultry eyes rose off the page and appeared in front of me, smoking and speaking with a French accent.
