#37. Never Let Me Go

Director: Mark Romanek
Writer(s): Alex Garland
Producers: Garland and Allon Reich
Distributor: Fox Searchlight

The Gist: Adapted from Kazuo Ishiguro’s novel; this is a poignant love story that begins with Ruth (Keira Knightley), Kathy (Carey Mulligan) and Tommy (Andrew Garfield), who spend their childhood at a seemingly idyllic English boarding school. As they grow into young adults, they find that they have to come to terms with the strength of the love they feel for each other, while preparing themselves for the haunting reality that awaits them…(more)

Cast: Keira Knightley, Carey Mulligan, Andrew Garfield, Charlotte Rampling, Sally Hawkins and Andrea Riseborough

Why is it on the list?: Due to a couple of projects that were stuck on the tarmac, Romanek’s sophomore feature comes a full eight years since the clinical One Hour Photo. That film proved what we already knew, Romanek is a wizkid with the camera, and at creating a sense of unease. This narrative with creepy science fiction-like ideas feels like the ideal follow-up.

Release Date/Status?: Expect a Fall release date with a fest showcase, perhaps a London Film Fest premiere.
