With lensing beginning this month for the Screen Gems remake (with Rod Lurie directing and Kate Bosworth and James Marsden starring as the traumatized couple), I thought we should point to the original – a film that by today’s standards still qualifies itself as a bizarre, trippy concoction. I’m not sure if the remake will include a lengthy scene of aggression and the same degree of violence as in Sam Peckinpah’s original (when scholars discuss the 71′ classic they make references to Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange), but what we do know is the setting is the backwoods of the Mississippi and not in the English countryside. This week’s Weekend Rental suggestion is Sam Peckinpah’s Straw Dogs (1971).
