HONG KONG: Edward Yang, the Cannes-winning Taiwanese engineer-turned-director known for his realistic portrayals of modern Taiwan, has died from complications from colon cancer, film consultant Norman Wang announced Monday. He was 59.

HONG KONG: Edward Yang, the Cannes-winning Taiwanese engineer-turned-director known for his realistic portrayals of modern Taiwan, has died from complications from colon cancer, film consultant Norman Wang announced Monday. He was 59. Yang, who was an American citizen, passed away at his home in Beverly Hills on Friday. Wang won Best Director at the 2000 Cannes for his work Yi Yi, which focused on the difference between our illusion of life and the reality in which it exists. His wife, concert pianist Kaili Peng, his 6-year-old son Sean, a younger sister and a brother survive the director. Yang had been tapped to helm an animated feature with Jackie Chan this year; no plans have been announced as to the future of that project. In honor of Yang – this week we suggest:
