The Weinstein co. makes news again, this time broadening its ever-growing scope into the world of nature documentaries with the French film The Besieged Fortress. The film will be released in France later this month by French firm TF1 Intl, with United States and English-speaking territories distributed by the Weinstein Co. in America, with English voiceover instead of subtitles.

The documentary is about African termites whose habitat is threatened by a massive storm and ant invaders. The film has reportedly been shot like it’s a “wildlife documentary shot like a true disaster movie.” The film was co-written and directed by Philippe Calderon.

The Weinsteins are obviously hoping for March of the Penguins success and acclaim. The one major difference though, penguins are cute, termites are disgusting. The mere thought of watching Them sized termites crawl all over in masses and fight ants and other creatures sounds terrifying. Also, people can feel for penguins. They feel their happiness and their plight. But termites? Look at that creature up there! If the whole lot of them dies, I’d probably cheer. Lately, it seems the recent crop of Weinstein Co. output seems more reactionary to past successes than their trailblazing old days.
