Kelly Reichardt is in Oregon currently shooting a period pic that has her re-teaming with Wendy and Lucy's Michelle Williams, and has the filmmaker working with her biggest cast yet additionally working with Dano, Bruce Greenwood (probably suggested by Todd Haynes), Shirley Henderson and Zoe Kazan.
"I wanted a gentle realism, verging on documentary. I also wanted to create a sense of intimacy with the audience and the characters on screen, as if we had been invited in by them, to watch them, to experience the weekend as they do. My influences are pretty varied from filmmakers like Kelly Reichardt, Ramin Bahrani and Joe Swanberg to the the photography of the artists Quinnford and Scout."
Toronto's TIFF Bell Lightbox will be presenting a full retrospective on American filmmaker Terrence Malick commencing June 4, leading up to the Canadian premiere of his newest film, the Palme d'Or-winning The Tree of Life, as it hits Toronto theatres on June 10. Of course, a 'full' retrospective on Malick will consist of only a mere five films - the same number as TIFF's 'New Auteurs' filmmakers Denis Côté and Kelly Reichardt.
Feminists everywhere can rejoice that Hanna's Saoirse Ronan proves that girl power is more about kicking ass than shaking it (hear that Zak). Fernando Santos gives Tootsie a run for her/his money in To Die Like a Man. Venice/TIFF/NYFF Meek's Cutoff turns Manifest Destiny on its collective head in Kelly Reichardt's third film starring Michelle Williams.
Unless you were at the Venice and/or TIFF film festivals, chances are you haven't seen Kelly Reichardt's Meek's Cutoff. The number five spot is reserved to someone who, I was surprised to “encounter” as the film unfolded and I would even suggest you skip over onto the next “New Face”. Pic above, is obviously not related to the pic.
