Looks like Romantic Comedies aren't dead. After backing James Franco lead perf in 127 Hours, Fox Searchlight will attempt to lure the actor with beaut Olivia Wilde under the mantle of the 2010 Black List favorite co-penned by Daryl Wein and Zoe Lister-Jones. Lola Versus originally had Anne Hathaway and then Nathalie Portman attached, but Wilde has been offered the part in a production I imagine Groundswell producers Jocelyn Hayes and Michael London are looking to set up sometime soon.
From General Hospital to in desperate need of a trip to the hospital - James Franco will find himself in the rock-climbing shoes of Aron Ralston in Danny Boyle's 90 minute exercise of show, not tell for Fox Searchlight. This Production Weekly twitter feed should get a lot of traction from the film news media, as most have been speculating since November whether the Ryan Gosling and Cillian Murphy would indeed play the solo part.
You have to appreciate an actor willing to go down to the minor leagues to learn more about the craft. James Franco is about to make a stint on the ongoing soap series General Hospital, and is more accurately, going this route not for a paycheck or lack of work but to research a future role...
Before heading off to Ireland for David Gordon Green's Your Highness, Franco has boarded a small indie production which begins shooting in New York on the 15th. The student will be directed by a unknown, but not inexperienced Jay Anania (Day on Fire) - a graduate film school prof at NYU.
Probably most recognizable to audiences as Harry Osborn, son of Norman Osborn (AKA The Green Goblin) in Sam Rami’s blockbuster Spiderman franchise, James Franco (Sonny, The Great Raid, Annapolis) launched his career with his portrayal of James Dean in TNT’s biopic based on the movie icon’s short but legendary life (Franco’s performance earned him a Golden Globe award, as well as Emmy and Screen Actor’s Guild nominations). The breakthrough role also caught the interest of Robert De Niro, who asked Franco a play his son in City By the Sea. A talented filmmaker in his own right, Franco has also written and directed three films: Fool’s Gold, The Ape, and the upcoming Good Time Max.
