Columbia Records: Jason Mitchell & Ellar Coltrane Enrol in Vikram Gandhis’ “Barry”

Joining the already cast Devon Terrell and Anya Taylor-Joy, Variety reports that Jason Mitchell and Ellar Coltrane have been added as the supporting players in Vikram Gandhi‘s Barry – a biopic that focuses on Barack Obama’s urban experience in New York City/Columbia University early eighties period…think community organizer beginnings and pre Harvard Law School shift (which is when the recently preemed Sundance selected Southside With You takes place). Produced by Gandhi, Cinetic’s Dana O’Keefe and Black Bear Pictures’ Teddy Schwarzman and Ben Stillman (upcoming Gold), production begins this month.

Gist: Written by Adam Mansbach (author of Go the F**k to Sleep) this is a biopic of Barack Obama (Terrell) set during his time as a college student in New York City.

Worth Noting: After breaking out big with the guinea pig docu experiment, Gandhi signed onto a more hard nosed docu series for HBO/VICE. See below.

Do We Care?: Curiously our Jordan M. Smith’s remarked in his review of  Kumaré, that the docu “becomes is an astounding test of art’s ability to transcend fiction in order to find momentous truths,” and perhaps the same can be said for this upcoming biopic. With a collection of young thesps in front of the camera, we look forward in sparking up this 80s set item.
