The Gist: Adapted from Wajdi Mouawad’s acclaimed stageplay, Incendies sees a pair of twins Jeanne and Simon Marwan weren’t expecting much from their mother Nawal’s will. They are understandably stunned when Jean Lebel, notary and longtime friend of Nawal’s, reads her last wishes: for the twins to hand-deliver two letters, one to a father they thought dead, the other to a brother they never knew existed.….(more)

Cast: Rémy Girard, Lubna Azabal, Mélissa Désormeaux-Poulin and Maxim Gaudette.

Why is it on the list?French Canada’s most talented filmmaker steps outside his bounds – adapting someone else’s material and moving production outside of North America. The project which reunites Villeneuve with DP André Turpin (Un crabe dans la tête) should have a robust aesthetic, but also promises to have a more “layered” narrative than in his previous work.

Release Date/Status?Villeneuve’s short Next Floor and Polytechnique were featured in back to back years at Cannes and this is most likely headed there as well. This will receive a Canadian release, TIFF representation and would most likely be showcased in a MoMA-type screening series in the U.S.
