The perpetually busy James Franco might just begin his 2015 with the Park City launch-padding of (among others) Pamela Romanowsky’s directorial debut comes across as an interplay between fiction and fact. Prior to landing The Adderall Diaries at (count ’em four) Sundance Institute’s Screenwriter’s Lab, the Director’s Lab, the Producer’s Summit, and the Film Music and Sound Design Lab at Skywalker Sound all in 2013, Romanowsky was one of the half dozen or so directors in The Color of Time (formerly titled “Tar”) which also starred Mila Kunis, Jessica Chastain and Zach Braff. Shooting began in May of this year, with Franco leading a cast comprised of Amber Heard and Christian Slater. Worth noting is Robert Redford has an executive producer cred, could it follow in the same fest berth as his last executive produced film, Drunktown’s Finest?
Gist: Writer Stephen Elliott (Franco) reaches a low point when his estranged father (Ed Harris) resurfaces, claiming that Stephen has fabricated much of the dark childhood that that fuels his writing. Adrift in the precarious grey area of memory, Stephen has to navigate the unstable terrain of truth and identity, led by three sources of inspiration: a new romance, the best friend who shares his history, and a murder trial that reminds him more than a little of his own story.
