2011 Sundance Predictions: Julian Farino’s The Oranges

Positioned right after top vote getter The Beaver in the annual Black List (2008), Julian Farino's The Oranges should be another big ticket sales item in the Premieres category. Pic stars Leighton Meester, Hugh Laurie, Adam Brody, Catherine Keener, Alia Shawkat, Oliver Platt, Allison Janney, Tim Guinee and Sam Rosen.

2011 Sundance Predictions: Andrew Okpeaha MacLean’s On the Ice

If Fargo symbolically made the act of murder cold in nature, then imagine if the setting was moved northwards to frigid Alaska. Since his Special Jury Prize win for his 2008 Sundance submitted short Sikumi, (an extension of his feature) Alaskan filmmaker Andrew Okpeaha MacLean attended both the Directors and Screenwriters Labs last year, and after completing filming earlier this year, looks poised to return to the fest this year with On the Ice.

2011 Sundance Predictions: Gregory Kohn’s Northeast

Kickstarter.com might just become a major supplier of DIY talent for the Sundance Film Festival. Last year's introduction of the NEXT section had an example, perhaps Gregory Kohn's Northeast will be one more project to follow. With a grab-bag of indie acting talent in David Call, Eléonore Hendricks and Tate Ellington, the low-budget, 16mm project appears likely for a SXSW birth, and perhaps Park City world preem.

2011 Sundance Predictions: Jesse Peretz’s My Idiot Brother

What should be a top acquisitions title for the festival, My Idiot Brother would mark the return of director Jesse Peretz who was at the festival with The Château a decade back. What will be a lengthy Eccles world premiere introduction, this stars a huge ensemble cast of Park City regulars in Zooey Deschanel, Elizabeth Banks, Paul Rudd, Rashida Jones, T.J. Miller, Emily Mortimer, Hugh Dancy, Adam Scott, Steve Coogan and Kathryn Hahn. Expect this to be selected for the Premieres section and be quickly picked up by a distributor within hours of premiering.

2011 Sundance Predictions: Jim Kohlberg’s The Music Never Stopped

Jim Kohlberg's The Music Never Stopped definitely appears to be the sort of title that could preem at either Sundance, SXSW, Tribeca or if they really want to take their time, TIFF. It really depends on the tone and where they're at in the post-production/submission phase. A first time director, Kohlberg's filmmaking experiences have been limited to the producers' chair capacity, most recently: Peter Askin's Trumbo.
