Less is More: Tribeca Film Festival Downsizes Event
With Geoffrey Gilmore in the portrait (his work will only be felt next year), Tribeca is making another great decision in shedding some of that baby fat. At eight years of age, the cuts make the festival leaner, less desperate for films and "more precise" in its programming. Scaling back to a sound number of 86, today's batch of 38 fill up the World Narrative and Documentary Comp selections and Discovery sections. Today's announcements demonstrates that relationships with filmmakers continue to flourish (I noticed a couple of names from the previous years).

The DVD of Rachel Getting Married hits streets tomorrow (via SPHE) and IONCINEMA.com received an exclusive clip taken from a panel discussion among cast and crew. Actors Mather Zickel, Bill Irwin, and Director of Photography - Declan Quinn discuss the harmonious nature of how the sequences were shot (basically they let the cameras roll).
Strand Helps ‘Headless Woman’
I found Lucrecia Martel's The Headless Woman hard to latch on to, tedious and never cared about the protagonist's plight which is the opposite about how I felt about Martel's The Holy Girl (La Niña Santa). Strand Releasing have picked up the difficult The Headless Woman and if they are smart, they'll pounce on Spanish-speaking crowds as well as, the regular art-house patrons.

Oscilloscope to Hit the Streets with Ostergaard’s Burma VJ
Fast forward two decades after that incident that saw a lone man stand face to face with a tanker in Tiananmen Square, and now the cameras are more in number and those doing the reporting are just as fearless. Oscilloscope Laboratories has picked up a second documentary film in just as many weeks, grabbing the 2009 IDFA and Sundance-winning doc film from Danish director Anders Ostergaard. The company plans a theatrical release this spring.
