Sundance Journal 2009 Day 7: Nicolas Winding Refn’s Bronson

When fleshing out the script for Bronson, Nicolas Winding Refn didn't have much to go on – the subject of the film has been in solitary confinement for the better part of his adult life and yet, the Danish filmmaker somehow managed to take a thin on plot biopic and fancy a style that uses fantasy to explore the missing pieces and the mindset of a man who finds extreme pleasure in extreme pain.

Sundance Journal 2009 Day 6: John Hindman’s Arlen Faber

I could feel that some parts of the crowd at the Racquet Club were totally into John Hindman's light-hearted, rom com, but I thought it was far too sweet, too fluffy and tried too hard.

Sundance Journal 2009 Day 5: Oren Moverman’s The Messenger

Sundance Journal 2009 Day 5: Cary Fukunaga’s Sin Nombre

Sin Nombre is pins and needles good with a strong package of well-written characters driving the antagonist and protagonist forces to several deadly ends.

Sundance Journal 2009 Day 4: Scott Sanders’ Black Dynamite

It has got poor editing, poorly staged visuals, the acting is horrible and the one holding the boom mike did a horrible job --- but of course that is the whole point, and it was obvious from the get-go that everyone was in on Scott Sanders' joke.
