While last year we got such items as Monsters, Our Day Will Come and Adam Wingard's A Horrible Way to Die (he returns to the line-up this year in the Midnight Madness section), this edition appears to be a cut above, they've got a pair of excellent features we caught back in Cannes with Joachim Trier's Oslo, August 31 (Un Certain Regard) and Justin Kurzel's Snowtown (Critics' Week). A highly touted item from Venice has also made the cut, and we're especially glad that we'll be able to see Tahar Rahim violently and emotionally lose it in Love and Bruises - Lou Ye's first film in another language and perhaps his "comeback" film of sorts.
Sony Think Timing is Best for Ol Parker’s ‘Now Is Good’
Always a good sign when your sophomore project gets picked up at the midway point of production, as is the case for Ol Parker's London-shot Now Is Good. Bought by Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions, this could possibly follow other pick-ups to be packaged as a Sony Pictures Classics project later down the line. The tear-jerker drama is comprised of Dakota Fanning in the lead, with supporting perfs from Jeremy Irvine, Paddy Considine, Olivia Williams and Kaya Scodelario, who we look forward in seeing in Andrea Arnold's upcoming adaptation of Wuthering Heights.

2011 Venice Int. Film Festival: Steve McQueen, Yorgos Lanthimos, Eran Kolirin and Andrea Arnold Among 20 Vying For Golden Lion
Today's announcement for the 2011 Venice Film Festival lineup basically crosses off plenty of sure bets we had been anticipating and makes us circle a bunch of titles we thought had a chance for a 2011 showing but now become hot items for the 2012 campaign. Films such as Juan Diego Solanas' Upside Down, Rodrigo Cortés' Red Lights, Pen-ek Ratanaruang's Headshot, Brillante Mendoza's Prey look more and more like Cannes 2012 items, while acquisition titles such as Antonio Campos' Simon Killer and Nick Cassavetes' Yellow wouldn't be out of place for a Sundance showing.
SPC Searches for ‘Darling Companion’
Sony Pictures Classics knows their market well. Loaded with a cast of actors who were ripe back in the 70's (Keaton, Kline, Shepard, Wiest and Richard Jenkins whose career really took off in the last decade), SPC have picked up Lawrence Kasdan's Darling Companion and have set it for their 2012 slate.
