Roads
It’s been four years since German director Sebastian Schipper’s single take thriller Victoria (2015), but he’ll back in 2019 with his first English language film, Roads, which he produced alongside J.C. Reymond and David Keitsch as a German-French co-production (Missing Link Films, Kazak Productions). The film is lensed by DP Matteo Cocco. Maren Ade, Jonas Dornbach, Kalle Friz, Isabel Hund, Jean-Christophe Reymond, and Janine Jackowski are all co-producing. An international cast is comprised of German star Moritz Bleibtreu, Ben Chaplin, Fionn Whitehead, Stephane Bak, and Claudia Trujillo. Schipper, previously known as an actor, became an international director of note with his fourth feature, Victoria, which won a Silver Bear for cinematography in the 2015 Berlin International Film Festival.
Gist: The refugee crisis informs the backdrop for the script by Schipper and co-writer Oliver Ziegenbalg, as William (Bak), a young man from the Congo teams up with the British runaway Gyllen (Whitehead), as they drive across Europe in search of the former’s brother.
Release Date/Prediction: Shot over eleven weeks in Morocco, Spain, and France, Schipper wrapped production in late 2017, which found many expecting Roads to pop up for a 2018 premiere. Currently set to premiere in German cinemas in February 2019, we expect Schipper to compete for the second time in Berlin.
