Celle que vous croyez

For his sixth film, Celle que vous croyez, France’s Safy Nebbou assembles an all-star cast led by Juliette Binoche, Nicole Garcia, Charles Berling, Guillaume Gouix, Francois Civil, Marie-Ange Casta, Claude Perron and Jules Houplain. Produced by Michel Saint-Jean of Diaphana Films, the project is being co-produced through Scope Pictures and France 3 Cinema. Cinematographer Gilles Portes (known for the film When the Seas Rises, co-directed by himself and Yolande Moreau in 2004) lensed the production. Nebbou is best known for his 2008 title Mark of Angel, a melodrama based on a true story starring Catherine Frot and Sandrine Bonnaire.

Gist: Co-written by Nebbou and Julie Peyr based on a novel by Camille Laurens, the narrative focus is 50-year-old Claire, a divorced mother of two who decided to spy on Ludo, her untrustworthy lover by creating a fake Facebook profile page using the picture and statistics of a comely twenty-something. Claire becomes Clara, and proceeds to digitally seduce Ludo’s friend Alex. Soon, one thing leads to another…

Release Date/Prediction: Nebbou went into production in early 2018. We’re assuming this will have a local theatrical release in France this coming February, with potential festival play at local European film festivals – perhaps Berlin, but more likely Tribeca or one of the French flavored fests.

Los Angeles based Nicholas Bell is IONCINEMA.com's Chief Film Critic and covers film festivals such as Sundance, Berlin, Cannes and TIFF. He is part of the critic groups on Rotten Tomatoes, The Los Angeles Film Critics Association (LAFCA), the Online Film Critics Society (OFCS) and GALECA. His top 3 for 2021: France (Bruno Dumont), Passing (Rebecca Hall) and Nightmare Alley (Guillermo Del Toro). He was a jury member at the 2019 Cleveland International Film Festival.
