Top 100 Most Anticipated Foreign Films of 2018: #93. Untitled Maxime Giroux Project

Quebecois director Maxime Giroux received his first international success with third feature Felix & Meira (2014), which won Best Canadian Film following its premiere at the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival and received US distribution through Oscilloscope. This past November, Giroux quietly embarked on his as-yet-titled fourth feature, which reunites him with go-to local Philip Seymour Hoffman-esque character actor Martin Dubreuil (who played Felix), and also stars Buddy Duress (of the Safdie Bros. Heaven Knows What and Good Time), as well as French singer/actress Soko. While the plot and official cast details have also yet to be revealed, the project was produced by oft-Xavier Dolan prod. house belonging to Nancy Grant and Sylvain Corbeil.

Release Date/Prediction: Giroux’s sophomore feature Jo for Jonathan (2010) competed in Locarno. Following the critical reception of Felix & Meira, we’d expect Giroux to be ready to bow at Cannes 2018, potentially in the Un Certain Regard or Directors’ Fortnight sidebars, a possibility enhanced by the presence of Soko.
