Thinking Triple XXX in Ozon’s Double Lover (2017) | Blu-ray Review

Though it will perhaps be best remembered as a sordid little slice of Eurotrash, there’s a lot of fun to be had with Francois Ozon’s playful erotic thriller Double Lover. Although it went home empty-handed following its premiere in competition at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival, Cohen Media Group brought it to limited theatrical release on Valentine’s Day 2018, where it soaked up around $167,000 at the US box office (their third Ozonian purchase, which brought in more for CMG than Ozon’s 2014 title The New Girlfriend but less than the 2012 hit In the House).

From our Cannes Film Festival review: Expert DP Manuel Dacosse (Alleluia; Evolution) provides the perfect visual flourishes in this hall of funhouse mirrors, including some expert comedy courtesy of some vocal felines. A generously foreboding score from Philippe Rombi (Swimming Pool; Under the Sand) also makes its presence known frequently, to fitting effect. Sleazy in all the best possible ways, this superficial little formulation of one woman’s bizarre predilections knows how to live deliciously.

Disc Review:

Cohen Media Group presents Double Lover in 2.35:1 with 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio. Picture and sound quality are sumptuous in this transfer, while Dacosse’s erotically charged frames meld wonderfully with Ozon’s kinky kitty motif.

Conversations from the Quad:
Francois Ozon and Marine Vacth are on hand for this seventeen-minute interview moderated by Richard Pena, Professor of Film Studies, Columbia University.
