Alma Har’el’s Honey Boy | 2019 Sundance Film Festival

When life gives you lemons, make a feature film out of it. A union that came about by a mutual appreciation artistic sensibilities, Alma Har’el finds here way into narrative fiction (and Sundance for that matter) with material that is deeply connected to her own difficult rapport with not only her father, but addiction. Among Park City’s buzz titles prior to the fest, Honey Boy passed the test becoming a buzz title after it’s premiere launch date. Dylan Dempsey and I attended different screenings for Honey Boy — so you can get the full scope on how the project came about.

Eric Lavallée is the founder, CEO, editor-in-chief, film journalist, and critic at IONCINEMA.com, established in 2000. A regular at Sundance, Cannes, and Venice, Eric holds a BFA in film studies from the Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinema. In 2013, he served on the narrative competition jury at the SXSW Film Festival. He was an associate producer on Mark Jackson’s "This Teacher" (2018 LA Film Festival, 2018 BFI London). He is a Golden Globes Voter, member of the ICS (International Cinephile Society), FIPRESCI and AQCC (Association québécoise des critiques de cinéma).
