2025 Cannes Critics’ Panel: Day 5 – Chie Hayakawa’s ‘Renoir’

Date:

Gradually making her presence known on the Croisette first with her Cinéfondation selected Niagara (2013) short, and eventually with 2022’s Plan 75 – an Un Certain Regard selection that would end up landing a Camera d’Or Special Mention (read ★★½ review), Japanese filmmaker Chie Hayakawa should provide more food for thought with her sophomore feature.

The seventh feature film in competition, production on Renoir took place between July to September of last year and tells the story of 11-year-old Fuki who experiences the turbulence of loneliness, sexual curiosity, and the pain of her dying father over one summer in Tokyo. Set in the late-1980s Tokyo, this stars Yui Suzuki, Lily Franky, Hikari Ishida, and Ayumu Nakajima. Set to be release in Japan this summer, the project was selected for the TorinoFilmLab FeatureLab in 2023 and is produced by Eiko Mizuno-Gray, Jason Gray, Christophe Bruncher and Fran Borgia. The project is a Japan-France-Singapore-Philippines-Indonesia co-production.

We are slightly jumping the gun here (there are three comp films playing today) with only one quarter of our jury sending in their grades but we’re looking at an average score just above the passing grade mark. At 3.3, Renoir is the two best graded film so far. You’ll also get an idea of how Linklater faired as well.
