Webber to take Trip to ‘The Spider’s House’

Date:

Brit filmmaker Peter Webber is embarking on his third straight novel to film adaptation, translating Paul Bowles’ Moroccan-set novel. Screen Daily reports that the director of Girl With a Pearl Earring and Hannibal Rising, will direct The Spider’s House sometime in early 09′. To be produced by Timothy Burrill’s production house, newcomer Laurie Cooke wrote the screenplay which was developed by Matrix Film Finance.

Bowles‘ novel is set in Fez, Morocco, during that country’s 1954 nationalist uprising, and explores the outsider in an alien society, and the gap in understanding between cultures. It follows two former lovers who meet by chance in the medieval city just as insurgents attempt to destabilize the country. Bowles is best known for penning The Sheltering Sky.

Interview: Marjane Satrapi & Vincent Paronnaud – Persepolis

The thrill of meeting Marjane Satrapi reminded me of being 6 years old at Disney Land when I met the living, breathing Cinderella. Except Cinderella was an actress with a blond wig and Marjane is the real woman behind her autobiographical graphic novel, turned movie, “Persepolis”. The distinctive mole on her nose and her dark sultry eyes rose off the page and appeared in front of me, smoking and speaking with a French accent.
