40th FNC: Shame, Snowtown, Faust, A Separation and Guilty of Romance Among Festival Selections

Breaking out around the time where NYFF is on its last legs, Montreal's Festival du nouveau cinéma (October 12 to 23) kicks in with about four times the size in volume, and obviously more of an eclectic range. This year is the festival's big 40 - and for the occasion they've commissioned some of the names who've been a part of the festival to each contribute a short film in the context of what is being called the "Cartes Blanches" series. Denis Côté, Deco Dawson, Sophie Deraspe, Rodrigue Jean, Zacharias Kunuk, Marie Losier, Catherine Martin, Bruce McDonald, Théodore Ushev and Denis Villeneuve will each submit a four minute short.

Sundance 2011 Spotlight Section: Tsangari, Villeneuve, Reichardt, Silva, Ayoade and Swanberg

Some major Venice, TIFF, NYFF titles have been added to Sundance including high quality premium titles in Attenberg, Meek's Cutoff and Submarine. Gregg Araki will once again have had the chance to showcase his films at top fest on the circuit, his latest film Kaboom which was shown at Cannes and TIFF will find it's final fest presentation in Park City. Denis Villeneuve will deliver one extra push before the Oscars (Incendies is a top tier pick among all the nominees). Mumblecore member Joe Swanberg is also in the section but with a world premiere of his film.

Toronto Int. Film Festival has padded another four Spanish produced or co-produced titles to their 2010 edition. In the Contemporary World Cinema section, we have the International Premiere for Achero Mañas's Anything You Want aka Todo Lo Que Quieras. Mañas, a former actor, returns to fiction after directing the documentary “Blackwhite” in 2004, his latest film tells the story of how a lawyer (Juan Diego Botto from The Dancer Upstairs) undergoes an identity metamorphosis in order to please and secure the emotional stability of his daughter...
