There's no Spielberg on this Top 100, Super 8 was left off the list and the Nick Frost and Simon Pegg penned alien comedy Paul wasn't even considered, but this comedy/alien invasion film appears to be a throwback to 80's films equipped with a zesty Brit humor that we found in his Star Wars action figure sketches appears to be an ideal feature introduction for this new helmer. Expectation levels with either increase or dip when the trailer is released.
Across the pond, I'm liking the sound of the new Michelle Williams' film - a take on Marilyn Monroe while on a 1957 set with Laurence Olivier to be played by Kenneth Branagh. Weinstein Co. is onboard My Week with Marilyn, which should begin shooting soon in the U.K. Andrea Arnold's Wuthering Heights still needs its Heathcliff and supporting cast. I imagine that long list is a short list by now, and that we should hear some casting news probably during TIFF with filming, at best, beginning at the very end of the month.
To those who thought making films with Star Wars figurines was a tad too infantile, today principle photography will begin on Joe Cornish’s alien invasion comedy feature film debut. The Adam & Joe Show creator who got his start by toying around, will re-team with Nick Frost on what is also being dubbed as an action adventure film, and the non-zombie flick lead and leader of a pack comes in the shape of Jodie Whittaker, whose body of work includes some feisty characters in Venus (the film that Peter O'Toole was nominated for at the Oscars - see pic below) and more recently, the horribly plain gangster film Perrier's Bounty.
I was so sure that this was Up in the Air's win, but this crazy category also included a dark horse picture in my books with first-timer Geoffrey Fletcher and his reaction at winning pretty much tells me that this was far from being in the bag.
Andrea Arnold, from Fish Tank, Red Road and Wasp fame, will be hitting Wuthering Heights next, but she might be following that up with another original piece called The Cleaner. Peter Strickland (see pic above) who made waves last year with his film Katalin Varga, will be going to Italy for his next project - a horror film called who is developing The Berberian Sound Studio.
