Top 100 Most Anticipated Films of 2010: David Michod's Animal Kingdom

#66. Animal Kingdom

Director/Writer: David Michôd
Producers: Liz Watts (Little Fish)
Distributor: Rights Available.

The Gist: Welcome to the jungle known as the Melbourne underworld. Animal Kingdom uses this edgy locale to unspool a gripping tale of survival and revenge. Pope Cody, an armed robber on the run from a gang of renegade detectives, is in hiding, surrounded by his roughneck friends and family. Soon, Pope's nephew, Joshua "J" Cody, arrives and moves in with his hitherto estranged relatives...(more)

Cast: Guy Pearce, Ben Mendelsohn and Joel Edgerton.

Why is it on the list?I'd strongly suggest for cinephiles to check out David Michôd's previous short film work, you'll get a sense of where Australian cinema is headed. The skilled helmer knows how to use his tool belt, and watching the trailer for Animal Kingdom is like melting chocolate for a fondue - you gain calories just from the visuals.

Release Date/Status?: Receiving it's world premiere in the World Dramatic Comp at Sundance, I'm thinking the big send out there will allow for it to be picked up for a  guessing this will be the first title to sell. Look for a 2010 release via a company such as IFC Films.

Review: The Kid With a Bike

Review: The Kid With a Bike

"Despite the one-dimensionality of its anti-patriarchal theme (appeasing the knee-jerk expectations of European film fest audiences), the Dardennes avoid cheapening the story with ideological smugness, achieving an emotional resonance without easy sentimentality."

Review: Wrong

"Encoded in the outlandish humor that pervades the film are bits of commentary on everyday life. The most overt is Dupieux's urging to appreciate the relationships around you, which is manifested in the dog kidnapping, but also in a subplot in which a woman from the pizzeria moves between men without even realizing they have changed. Another cultural critique is found in the rainy office, an instantly recognizable visual metaphor for how dreary a 9 to 5 job can be."
