Denmark’s Thomas Vinterberg reunites with most of the crew from his 2012 drama The Hunt for a drama about binge drinking, Druk (Next Round), which will star Mads Mikkelsen, Thomas Bo Larsen, Lars Ranthe, Magnus Millang, Susse Wold, Helene Reingaard Neumann and Maria Bonnevie. Sisse Graum Jorgensen and Kasper Dissing are producing, while the project is being lensed by Sturla Brandth Grovlen (the Victoria DP has a busy 2020, having worked on Eskil Vogt’s The Innocents, Benh Zeitlin’s Wendy and Josephine Decker’s Shirley as well). One of the iconic Dogme 95 founders, whose Celebration won the Jury Prize at the 1998 Cannes Film Festival, Vinterberg has dabbled in several languages and genres. He returned to Cannes in 2012 with The Hunt, which won Mikkelsen Best Actor as well as the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury. He has also twice competed in Berlin, with 2010’s Submarino and 2016’s The Commune (which won Best Actress for Trine Dyrholm).

Gist: Co-written by Vinterberg’s usual scribe Tobias Lindholm (who penned Submarino, The Hunt, and The Commune while also embarking on his own directorial career with R, A Hijacking and A War), fatigued teacher Martin (Mikkelsen), along with three of his colleagues, embark on a social experiment involving alcohol and its potential to inspire creativity. The results, while initially promising, also inspire other consequences.

Release Date/Prediction: Filmed over the Summer of 2019, a Danish theatrical released is scheduled for late August of 2020, suggesting Vinterberg could be aiming to return to the main competition at Cannes for the third time.
