Miranda July, Alex Gibney and Rob Minkoff: Last Minute Additions to Sundance
Not exactly last minute as we are more than 30 days away from the festival launch, but organizers have added three titles to their Premieres categories and this includes Rob Minkoff's Flypaper, Miranda July's The Future (which was among our predictions list) and Alex Gibney's latest doc (he teams with Alison Ellwood) entitled Magic Trip (formerly titled "Magic Bus"), which we tweeted would most likely be a candidate as well. Now we know why this announcement was put on hold. Seeing as both fests are back to back and one ends up supplying the other, Sundance John Cooper kindly obliged before annoucing the inclusion of Miranda July's The Future, a German-U.S co-production title that Berlinale Director Dieter Kosslick is obviously pleased to include in his festival.
Alex Cox’s ‘Repo Chick’ Repossessing Theatres in January
Alex Cox's Repo Chick won't be sent to the dumps. The Venice preemed, sequel to Cox's Repo Man is set to get a quick release via Industrial Entertainment in New York City’s IFC Center on January 14th and the Downtown Independent in Los Angeles on January 21st.
Film Movement Take a Hike Up ‘The Colors of the Mountain’
Film Movement have added a stocking stuffer acquisition by grabbing Carlos César Arbeláez's debut film. The Colors of the Mountain. A film that has been floating around the Fall film festival circuit and was unknown us was filmed in Colombian mountainside with non-professional kid actors. If you're into that sort of thing, then look out for the film sometime next summer.
The King’s Speech Leads Golden Globe Noms Plus Jeers and Cheers
The Golden Globes award noms (a.k.a the "friendly" awards) have been unveiled and The King’s Speech leads with seven nominations while The Fighter and The Social Network following close behind with six noms each. The Comedy or Musical categories remind us why the show is more of a popularity contest than anything else, but knowing that we can still have contempt for the whole thing, we'll end up half-watching anyways when it airs next month.
