2011 Sundance Predictions: Vera Farmiga’s Higher Ground
Last year, Sundance welcomed Mark Ruffalo and Philip Seymour Hoffman's directorial debuts for a world premiere launch (Sympathy for Delicious and Jack Goes Boating respectively), seems fitting they'll do the same for an actress whose career got a major jump start at the fest with her brilliant perf in Down to the Bone. Shot this summer, it would be a "miracle" if Vera Farmiga's debut, an adaption of Carolyn Briggs' memoir This Dark World is somehow completed: juggling two new babies one called Higher Ground, the other one in a literal sense of the word.
2011 Sundance Predictions: Braden King’s HERE
I sound like a broken record trying to predict when Braden King's HERE will finally have its world premiere. I wasn't totally off when I mentioned the Sundance/Cannes supported filmmaker would make it at last year's edition, but King came packing "Postcards from HERE" - a chronicle of the production. This year we expectt: a final film to be shown in Sundance and Berlin.
2011 Sundance Predictions: Susan Youssef’s Habibi Rasak Kharban
IFP Independent Filmmaker Lab, Cinereach, and even Richard Linklater (who'll be at the fest this year presenting the 20th year anniversary projection of Slackers) have all had a helping hand in writer/director Susan Youssef's Habibi Rasak Kharban. Youssef, a profiled Filmmaker Magazine 25 New Face should be hitting Park City once again - she screened one of her shorts at the fest.
2011 Sundance Predictions: Rashaad Ernesto Green’s Gun Hill Road
If Rashaad Ernesto Green's (see pic above) debut lands in Park City, it'll be representing the tough streets located in the Bronx. Selected for the 2010 Tribeca All Access Program, Gun Hill Road was a recipient of the 2009 Spike Lee Fellowship, and this fall, was selected for the 2010 IFP Project Forum. Among Filmmaker Magazine’s 25 New Faces list, this would be Green's second trip to the festival, following the Sundance selected short, 2009's Choices.
2011 Sundance Predictions: Lance Daly’s The Good Doctor
Kisses director Lance Daly made a splash with Kisses two years back, that quickly secured him this shot in L.A. project which includes plenty of Sundance alumni in Orlando Bloom, Riley Keough, Taraji P. Henson, Michael Peña and a small cameo from J.K. Simmons. The Good Doctor, a drama thriller would aspire to a Premieres category world preem to be followed by a possible showing in Berlin.
