Top 100 Most Anticipated Films of 2011: Jia Zhang-ke’s In the Qing Dynasty

How odd that Jia Zhang-ke follows fellow Asian auteur filmmakers such as Wong Kar Wai and Hou Hsiao Hsien in wanting to branch into the martial arts genre. We are paying close attention and look forward to this sixth generation filmmaker (The World, Still Life and 24 City) regardless of what his does next - although I do admit to not having seen his last picture, I Wish i Knew.

Top 100 Most Anticipated Films of 2011: David Fincher’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

I don't really care for the material on which this is based on, but snobbery aside, Fincher might actually take a good shot at this and make me likely make me want to catch this premiere night with fellow goth fans and book club folks alike. We know how good of an actress the original Liz is (Hollywood has come knocking on Noomi Rapace's door) let's just hope that this doesn't come across as a copycat remake but instead as interesting as the transformative process that Rooney Mara underwent for the role.

Top 100 Most Anticipated Films of 2011: Tarsem’s Immortals

I think Tarsem may have finally met his match with this huge budgeted, swords and sandals, Gods vs. humans fantasy pic. The Cell and The Fall were great calling cards that confirmed his talent, but this should confirm Tarsem's status as a go-to filmmaker for big scale especially in the genre -- it's so up his alley if you consider some of his commercial work.

Top 100 Most Anticipated Films of 2011: Dominik Moll’s The Monk

I'm a huge fan of Dominik Moll's last pair of films in With a Friend Like Harry (2000) and Lemming (2005). I could say the same about Vincent Cassel but I'm perplexed by the chosen material the filmmaker selected for his next project.

Top 100 Most Anticipated Films of 2011: Pawel Pawlikowski’s The Woman in the Fifth

We were faced with a drought from this filmmaker so our anticipation levels are at a higher level than norm as he only has a pair of completed films to show for in the past decade: the gritty sophomore film Last Resort and his moody and lush 2004 film, My Summer of Love - which also happens to be a book adaptation such as this project. I'm hoping that the paired actors in Ethan Hawke and Kristin Scott Thomas can belt out some fine performances, if so we might find this on the Croisette.
