Black Swan Swooned at Indie Spirit Awards
I went 10/13 with my predictions of the Indie Spirits today -- my misfires came in the Best Picture and Best Actress categories thinking that Winter's Bone had the edge over Black Swan. Not that Winter's Bone didn't have a good night (it won in the Best Supporting categories - I thought that Bill Murray had the edge over John Hawkes is where I flubbed as well) but it was indeed a Black Swan event -- with additional wins for Directing (Darren Aronofsky) and Cinematography (Matthew Libatique). 36th Cesar Awards: Of Gods and Men Wins Best Film, Polanski Win Best Director
48 hours before the Oscars, it was the French who feted the best in French cinema in 2010 with the 36th edition of the Cesar Awards. A trio of films claimed the most awards: Of Gods and Men (the Cannes winning film which was on the Oscar shortlist of nine but didn't make it into the final round) took the top award of Best Film and three in total tying up with Gainsbourg (which was picked up this week by Music Box Films) which won for Best Actor. The big winner of the night with four awards out of eight total noms was roman Polanski's The Ghost Writer which isn't in the French language but was a French production that won the filmmaker the Best Director award.
Panorama Become ‘Vintner’s Luck’ Guardian Angel
The homevid label Panorama Ent. have picked up some table scraps that nobody wants in Niki Caro's The Vintner's Luck - a surprise bomb that appeared at the 2009 edition of TIFF from the filmmaker who gave us the affecting The Whale Rider. The wine-making period romance will make its U.S. premiere this month at the Sedona Film Festival with a theatrical roll-out planned for this spring/summer.
Music Box in Tune with ‘Gainsbourg’
French cinema friendly distrib label Music Box Films (they have Potiche on their upcoming release slate) have grabbed comic book artist Joann Sfar's Gainsbourg -- a feature debut that preemed in 2010 and showed up at the Tribeca Film Festival but ultimately failed to light a fire among the other foreign film distributors. I imagine that a flower dress month in the summer would be the ideal for the film's release.
