In what was a highly anticipated Cannes competition rematch, Emilia Pérez stole the spotlight from Anora, sweeping four awards including Zoe Saldaña receiving the Best Supporting Actress nod possibly confirming that the four-person Best Actress win back in Cannes was with her as top billing. Another Cannes logline that we didn’t see coming was Demi Moore clinching a surprise win for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy for The Substance, beating out favorites Mikey Madison (Anora) and Karla Sofía Gascón (Emilia Pérez). Fernanda Torres, who claimed what she thought was an unexpected nod last night, may indeed follow in her mother Fernanda Montenegro’s footsteps by securing an “Oscar nomination for her role in a Walter Salles film.” I’m Still Here is almost certain to receive a pair of Oscar noms.
Meanwhile, the awards season buzz for Brady Corbet‘s The Brutalist is further cemented – his film took Best Drama, Best Director, and Best Actor in a Drama — this positions Adrien Brody as the frontrunner in the Best Actor race for Oscar gold and Flow, now emerges as the heavyweight Goliath contender in the Best Animation category. The indie animated film did manage to get some acclaim from the Un Certain Regard Cannes showcase but didn’t claim an award in the section so now Janus and Sideshow will take on the deep pockets of Disney and Universal. Jesse Eisenberg’s A Real Pain and Aaron Schimberg’s A Different Man will certainly gain more traction for Kieran Culkin and Sebastian Stan – those might still fall in the dark horse candidates in their respective categories.
