2012 Cannes Film Festival Predictions: Patrice Leconte’s The Suicide Shop

Date:

Gist: “Imagine a store where for ten generations they have been selling anything available to commit suicide. This small mom and pop shop profits from the sadness and somber moods of desperate individuals until a fateful day where a formidable adversary appears: la joie de vivre (aka the joy of life).

Prediction: Leconte hasn’t competed in Cannes for over fifteen years now, and given the light nature of this first foray into animation, he’s likely to continue the streak with an Out of Competition showing. The film’s droll, deadpan tone appears similar to that found in Sylvain Chomet’s hit animated film The Triplets of Belleville, and that film too had an OOC slot back in 2003.
